Visit by Director-General Danielsson to Montenegro

Podgorica, 18 May 2017 – Director-General for EU Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Christian Danielsson paid an official visit to Montenegro, where he met with Montenegro's officials and laid a foundation stone for the construction of 51 apartments in Konik within the Regional Housing Programme. After the ceremony, Mr Danielsson addressed the media.

Mr Danielsson underlined the importance of social inclusion of Roma community not only by providing durable housing solutions but also by ensuring full integration to society, access to work and other opportunities. He noted the EU will continue supporting Montenegro in achieving this.

Mr Danielsson noted that he spoke with PM Markovic and several ministers about where Montenegro stands in the accession process. He noted Montenegro's steady progress towards this objective and added that good steps have been made in setting up the legal and institutional framework, but that it is now important that these new structures deliver and ensure sustainable track record. He noted that this process requires active participation of all actors, such as the NGOs but also the opposition. "The European way is to have political discussion in the Parliament," he noted in his address to the media after the ceremony.

Mr Danielsson also spoke with Montenegrin officials about regional cooperation, where he noted that Montenegro is the frontrunner in the implementation of the Connectivity Reform Measures, including on economic cooperation, energy, and infrastructure. Regional economic integration must be fully owned by the countries of the region and is actually complementary to Montenegro's accession process, Mr Danielsson said.

Mr Danielsson concluded by saying he looks forward to the Trieste Summit and making it a real success.
